Construction of two parks begin in Male’

Work on constructing two parks in Male’ has begun, under the theme of the World Habitat Day marked in Maldives for the first time this year. The slogan for this year’s Habitat Day is “A Safe City is a Just City”.

Urban Ministry’s Director of Housing Mohamed Faiz said on Wednesday that several events were planned for the day and that beginning the construction of the two parks in Male’ was just the first event. He said that the parks being constructed in two areas of Male will be completed soon.

“This is being planned to give residents a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the crowded city,” he said. “In addition to the parks, open areas are also being planned to be made.”

He also said that one park was now almost completely finished and only greening it with plants was what remained. Work on the other park was now underway, he added. He also revealed the location of the two parks. One is located in Galolhu ward, in the empty area which previously housed the old Power House and the other park is in the empty area near the STO Building in Maafannu.

He said that in addition to the parks they were also planning to widen the sidewalks on some of the roads and make new ones on roads that currently didn’t have a sidewalk.

“The sidewalk project is being carried out under a pilot project,” Faiz said. “The actual work will begin near the beginning of next year.”

He said that currently they are surveying the roads and that they will begin designing the roads next.

This is no surprise! This is a stunt to hush those who are opposed to the construction of a 15 sotrey 5 star hotel in Male (an island of 3 sq km) with more than 100,000 humanbeings. The most densely populated city in the world. Rather than leaving the green zone for locals enjoyment, this government want to bulldoze the site and erect a concrete monster on the waterfront of Male. Shame!
