MALE, November 5, 2007 (Haveeru News Service) -- Thieves snatched a bag containing US$ 15,000 and Rf 16,000 in cheques from a man who was having tea inside a hotel in the Alimas Carnival on Sunday.

A Police Official said yesterday that the incident had occurred around 8:30am and that the money belonged to Sun Maldives International, which had previously managed the Vaadhoo Island Resort.

An official from the company said that the money that had been stolen was being taken to the bank to be deposited and that a large number of cheques were also inside the bag when it was stolen.

“The money was stolen from an expatriate who works here,” the company official said. “He was having tea at the hotel when four people on two motorcycles arrived. One of them parked the cycle and snatched the bag from him.”

He said that the expatriate had tried to follow the thieves but had lost them.

Police said that they were investigating the case and requested that if anyone had any knowledge about the theft they should contact the Police.
