Finance Minister Qasim resigns from cabinet

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Male' - 16:00 - A statement from Qasim says that he resigned because he did not get the support and backing from other government institutions in implementing the budget passed for 2007 and 2008. He said that he is not prepared to take the entire blame for the economic failure of the country. Dictator Gayyoom was in fact Finance Minister, amongst other things for more than 27 years. Qasim was only appointed to the cabinet in 2005. Whilst some blame Qasim for shortcomings in the economy, the main culprit is the Dictator himself, without a shadow of a doubt.
Male' - Reliable sources have confirmed that the Maldives Finance Minister Qasim Ibrahim (Burumaa) has resigned from his cabinet post this afternoon. Details are still sketchy and we will bring more as soon as we get them. There have been speculation over his resignation for several months pointing to a possible challenge to the presidency later this year. Qasim Ibrahim is also Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly as well as Deputy Leader of DRP, formed by Dictator Gayyoom.
He is also one of the richest man in the country and a much respected philanthropist.
