Staff strike at Diva Maldives ends after management reinstated 3 sacked staff

Thursday, June 05, 2008

Diva Maldives – Sources from Diva Maldives resort confirmed earlier that the strike by staff demanding the reinstatement of the 3 sacked colleagues of theirs was called of this afternoon. The staff who had been on strike for just under 72 hours got their way after the resort management agreed to reinstate their colleagues.
The resolution came about as a result of a meeting at the Tourism Ministry this morning. It was attended by two senior members of the resort management (Mr. Piatt, Human Rights Manager and Ms. Christine, Resident Manager), representatives from the staff and their lawyers, officials from Ministry of Labour in addition to Tourism Ministry officials.
Local staff in Diva Maldives, who are outnumbered by foreigners have been complaining since last year on issues of staff food, accommodation, recreation and low salary. The 3 who were sacked without any reason on Monday were 3 of the 5 representatives of the staff who met the management to discuss these issues.
There are also reports that the Resident Manager Christine has been temporarily suspended but we are unable to verify this independently.

This is a great achievement indeed, and thanks for the people who stands for the rights of all. This is a good example for everyone to recognize that if we come together with common agenda we can bring changes. Should not bow your head, raise your head and live life, no matter who ever you are. Thank you for the efforts made by Ministry of Tourism, and the people who involved in resolving this matter. Great effort!!. Good luck to all of you people.
