According to the amendment brought to the Constitution, those excluded from the Employment Act under Article 34 will now not include resort staff. When the Act was initially passed and put into effect by the People’s Majlis, all tourism industry workers, along with those employed in emergency situations, crew of seafaring vessels, aircrafts, people engaged in dispatching and receiving aircrafts or ocean going vessels, loaders and un-loaders of ocean going vessels or aircrafts, people engaged in providing support services to aircrafts and ocean going vessels, people employed in industrial sites on uninhabited islands and top level officials are excluded from the conditions in the Act.
With the amendment brought to the Bill by the People’s Majlis, the scheduled industry-wide tourism strike has been called off by the Tourism Employee Association of Maldives (TEAM).
Several MPs at the Majlis meeting spoke on the fact that the Police and Army were excluded from the Employment Act. Male’ MP Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) said that the Police and Army Act does not specify salaries, benefits, word conditions, contracts and job descriptions and so were being deprived of basic labour rights. He also said that the Police and Army were excluded from the Employment Act without the matter ever having being discussed on the Majlis floor.
Out of the nine amendments submitted for a vote, only four were approved.
